Lynne Marshall, ONE FOR THE ROAD and Mega Giveaways!

Today we are chatting with Lynne Marshall about her favourite romance movies of all time and her latest offering, ONE FOR THE ROAD!

So we give it over to Lynne.....

First off, I’d like to say what a pleasure it is to visit Nas Dean’s site again.  Nas is one incredibly supportive reader of romance, and as an author, I can’t thank her enough.

When Nas asked me to blog I scratched my head and wondered what in the world I could talk about that might interest all the different tastes of romance readers.  Romance of course!  And since my current book features a slightly more mature couple – she’s 46 and he’s 42, I thought I’d feature above-the-normal age love stories.

Something we all relate to is cinema and love stories, and recently having seen Larry Crowne – the new Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts movie, I realized that more than a few movies these days star older couples.  So I decided to go back over time and post a list of older heroines (over forty) in fun or super romantic stories, in honor of my new book – One for the Road.

One movie I didn’t include in this list is Julie and Julia, staring Amy Andrews and Meryl Streep, because the film’s focus was on the main character’s blog and how she cooked each of Julia Child’s recipes in a one year period.  However, I found the secondary story of Julia Child and her husband to be sweet and poignant.  They truly shared a deep and lasting, AND physical love.  I loved that movie!

Now, without further adieu, here’s …

LYNNE MARSHALL’S TOP TEN ROMANTIC MOVIES FEATURING OLDER COUPLES (Listed chronologically)

  1. Adam’s Rib (Classic 1949) featuring Katharyn Hepburn and Spencer Tracy as married lawyers pitted against each other in a court case involving adultery.  He defends the adulterous husband, she defends the lover, and the case overflows to their happy home life. (Romantic Comedy)

  1. The African Queen (Classic 1951) Katharyn Hepburn plays a prim missionary spinstress to Humphrey Bogart’s gin soaked riverboat captain. (Drama)

  1. The Desk Set (Classic 1957) Katharyn Hepburn and Spencer Tracy – The broadcasting network librarian (Hepburn) is pitted against the inventor of a computer (Tracy) which threatens to make many company jobs obsolete.  Once again, Hepburn and Tracy discover they’re a perfect match. (Romantic Comedy)

  1. Love Among the Ruins, 1975 Starring a very mature couple – Sir Laurence Olivier and Katharyn Hepburn. Aging grande dame of the London theater (Hepburn) is accused by a young man of seducing and then abandoning him.  She retains the services of the greatest barrister in Britain (Olivier), who turns out to be a former suitor still in love with her. (Drama)

  1. Terms of Endearment 1983 Jack Nicholson plays ex-astronaut Garrett Breedlove and Shirley McLaine plays his next door neighbor, Aurora.  The movie spans thirty years and along with the mother/daughter relationship, features the rocky romance between the next door neighbors, where the ne’re-do-well astronaut proves he is able to love over the long haul. (Heavy drama with light moments)

  1. Shadowlands, 1993 Debra Winger plays a forty-something divorcee who finds love and devotion with a middle aged University professor named C.E. Lewis, played by Anthony Hopkins. (Drama)

  1. What Women Want 2000 – Mel Gibson (before his fall from grace and at his prime) and Helen Hunt.  Alpha male Nick almost electrocutes himself and as a result is able to hear women’s thoughts.  He uses it to his advantage on the job and with Darcy, and even as they grow closer and develop feelings for each other, he betrays her.  Proving he has a heart, after being responsible for Darcy losing her job, he sacrifices his own job for her. (Romantic Comedy)

  1. Something’s Got to Give 2004 – Jack Nicholson and Dianne Keaton, the fifty and sixty-something couple, both facing transitions in life, find love though being complete opposites. (Romantic Comedy)

  1. Mama Mia 2009 - Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan portray the long estranged couple.  Summonsed to Greece by Sophie, an old girlfriend’s daughter, Harry arrives for a birthday party.  Who of the three special guests is Sophie’s father? Thanks to several diary entries, a long-ago, but never forgotten love gets rekindled. (Musical Comedy Romance)

  1. It’s Complicated 2010 – Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin – Divorced for ten years, Jake and Jane still have feelings for each other.  They have an affair and enjoy the naughty excitement.  Good guy Adam, the architect hired to remodel Jane’s home, has genuine feelings for Jane.  Will she come to her senses and realize true love, the kind that lasts, isn’t always about bells and whistles? (Romantic-ish Comedy)

So there you have it, my list.  Now I’d love to hear about your favorite love story featuring a more mature couple!

Thanks for having me, Nas!  It was great fun to be here.  Hope to see you all on the road! I’ll stick around all day to answer each comment.

Bio: Lynne used to worry she had a serious problem with daydreaming, then she discovered she was supposed to write the stories in her head. A late bloomer, Lynne came to fiction writing after her children were nearly grown. Now she battles the empty nest by writing stories which always include a romance, sometimes medicine, a dose of mirth, or both, but always stories from her heart. She is a Southern California native, married for almost thirty years, has two adult children she is super proud of, is a dog lover, cat admirer, a power walker, and fellow traveler on this wild road called life!

Lynne has written ten books for Mills & Boon Medical Romance, has her debut Harlequin Special Edition set for March 2012 release – Courting His Favorite Nurse – and writes contemporary romance featuring mature heroines for The Wild Rose Press.

Hey friends, Lynne has this superb news! She'll do a three book giveaway! I was lucky to have read these three books and they all are connected by being based on a fictional medical centre. The Midcoast Medical Trilogy is based at Midcoast Medical Center. The three books are:

The Heart Doctor and the Baby

  1. I love Katharyn Hepburn, so I'll have to check out the movies you listed, Lynne. As for me, my favorite mature couple has to be Ruth Bennet and Pat from Barbara Michael's book Ammie Come Home. They're just wonderfully funny and real.

Thank you for hosting Lynne, Nas!

  2. What a great list. I was going to post It's Complicated. But, then I thought of The Notebook with James Garner and Gina Rowlands. Granted the story is partly about how they met and came to be together, but I'm talking about their present life. How he reads her their love story to help her remember every day as she has Alzheimer's.

  3. Hello Marlena and Donna!

Thanks for coming by. Marlena, I love Katherine Hepburn's movies and Donna, The Notebook! When the romance part was being shown between the young couple was ok, but I couldn't control my tears later.

My daughter kept saying, Mum, there's nothing to cry about, but to me it was if I grow old and had these ailment, will there be someone to look after me? Or would a certain someone bring in a new wife!!!

  4. Hi Marlena - thank you for reading and commenting on the blog. Kate Hepburn was a total class act!

And thank you for recommending Ms. Michael's book. I've written the title down and plan to check it out.

    best wishes,
    Lynne

  5. Dear Donna,
I got all teary-eyed just reading your comment, that's how deeply that movie affected me. It was one of the first Nicholas SParks books I read, and I forced my husband to read it. Even he got chocked up at the end.

Thanks for commenting, and I'm glad you like the list!

    ReplyDelete
  6. Nas! I know how you feel. Can you imagine having a loved one not remember you? So tough. The only good thing would be, if that certain someone got a new wife, you wouldn't feel bad because you probably wouldn't remember him.

Crazy logic, but I'm just trying to lighten the topic! : )

    ReplyDelete
  7. How about The Bridges of Madison County? I think mostly of the movie with Clint Eastwood and Merle Streep, but I read the book too.

Another tearjerker - although I don't condone affairs.

  8. I loved all of your choices, Lynne, and have to add Murphy's Romance (1985) starring James Garner and Sally Fields. Sally Fields' plays Emma a divorced woman with a teen aged boy who moves into a small town. James Garner plays Murphy the town druggist who steers business her way. Then her ex-husband shows up. I particularly enjoyed the sub plot with the son. Favorite lines
Emma: "I'm in love for the first time in my life."
Murphy: "I'm in love... for the last time in my life."

It still makes my sigh in happiness.

  9. Lynne, I love your list of movies with more mature heroes and heroines--I do think Murphy's Romance should be added.

I look forward to reading One for the Road. It sounds fascinating!

  10. Hi Kathy! You know, I'm with you on affairs, that is one reason I didn't think of that movie, but also, I don't believe it had what we'd call a classic romance ending. Though several of the other movies I mentioned weren't classic romances, either. The honest truth is, I never got into that book or movie like so many others did. Not sure why. It just didn't grab me.
Thanks so much for reading the blog and commenting!

  11. Hi Maria!
I only have a vague memory of that one, and I love both James Garner and Sally Fields. I've got to go back and see it again.

    Love the quote!

    thanks for reading and commenting.

  12. Hi Sheandeen! OK, that's two votes for Murphy's Law. I've got to see it again. I'm sure my husband and I would have seen it together.

Thanks so much for wanting to read One for the Road. It's completely different from my Medical Romance books.

    Thanks for commenting.

  13. Hey Lynne! Loved the list - I'll have to force my family to watch some of these, especially the older ones! (It's been awhile...) I'm waiting impatiently to wrest the Kindle from hubby so I can read One for the Road. Cheers dear!

  14. Hi Lynne - Love the list. Seems to be a Jack Nicholson theme going, with Spencer Tracy a close second! Good luck with your book. I have started it and am enjoying it!!

  15. Hi Christine and Charlene! Thanks for stopping by, reading and commenting on the blog.

Christine - when you get your hands on the family Kindle, I hope you'll enjoy my foray into a bigger story with a road trip theme. Cheers back at ya!

Charlene - you know I've never been crazy about Jack Nicholson as a leading man, but in the films I've named he pulls off a wonderfully believable performance. So glad that your enjoying One for the Road!

    thanks for commenting.

  16. After reading and enjoying this blog post, I'm craving a Katharine Hepburn movie. :)

    ReplyDelete
  17. Fantastic list. I've seen most of them too (which is amazing).

    ReplyDelete
  18. Hi Michelle - Isn't Kate H. the best? Her list goes on and on, and most of them are classics. thanks so much for reading the blog and commenting.

    All the best,
    Lynne

  19. Hi Lynda!
I'm glad you like the list and hat you've seen most of the movies. Wish we could see more romance movies with women of a certain age, but Hollywood seems to have other ideas about it. UK gets it right much of the time. Helen Mirren comes ot mind...still sexy after all these years.

I imagined Jamie Leigh Curtis circa 1994 and True Lies when I wrote D'Anne Palmer for One for the Road. Just to give you an idea.

    Thanks for commenting.

  20. Hi Lynne!
I'm a fan! Loved African Queen and Something's Got to Give and Terms of Endearment. Can't wait to read your new book. It sounds wonderful. Must. Meet. Deadline. First.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Hi Nas and Lynne :)

Love the interview, and I love all your choices too. The African Queen is one of my favourite films :)

    ReplyDelete
  22. Such a great list! I loved The African Queen and Shadowlands. Anthony Hopkins was perfect as CS Lewis.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Waving to Nas and Lynne. Great list, Lynn. I loved African Queen. I saw a sweet movie recently, Letters to Juliet, that featured an older couple with Vanessa Redgrave looking for a long lost love. The younger love story was the focus of the movie, but I still loved the older couple reuniting.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Hi Nas! I'm back! This was such an interesting interview. My fave 'mature couple' romance is 'Bridges of Madison County.' Love both the book and film. Go Merryl and Clint!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Hi Wendy - I know about deadlines! Hope you meet yours with days to spare. thanks for commenting.

Hi Serentiy - so glad you enjoyed the blog. Yes, The African Queen is all time classic. Thanks for commenting!

Hi Deniz - Oh, yes Shadowlands was a fantastic film. It transcended love as we know it. Mr. Hopkins is a master, and you're right, he played C.S. Lewis beautifully.

Hi Carol! I recently saw Letters to Juliet with my daughter when she visited me in NY - saw it in the hotel room after a long day of sighseeing. You're right, older couples frequently get pushed to the secondary story of books and movies. I enjoyed that storyline very much. Vanessa Redgrave is like fine wine, you know? Thanks for your support!

Hi L'Aussie - so glad you enjoyed the blog. I haven't seen Meryl Streep in Bridges of Madison County, please don't shoot me. Will fix my blaring flaw in the near future. Promise! Thanks so much for commenting.

  26. Hi Lynne and Nas ~ The African Queen is one of my favorite movies! I'm a big Humphrey Bogart fan. How about Casablanca? Loved that one too. This was a great list, Lynne, and I'm looking forward to starting One For The Road!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Hi Robin! Yes, Casablanca is another great love story, but Ingrid Bergman was a young one, not over forty - so that's why I didn't include it. So glad you liked the list.

I hope you enjoy One for the Road. It's very different from my usual books for category.

    Thanks so much for commenting.

  28. What a great selection of movies. One of my all-time favorites is Love Actually. This movie always makes me smile. Good luck with your newest release, Lynn.

*Nas, furiously making list of movies to see!*

  30. Hello Lynne and Nas.
That was a great list. I haven't seen them all but I did love, 'Somethings got to give.'

Windy S. Marcus is visiting me today.

    Nancy
    N. R. Williams, The Treasures of Carmelidrium

  31. Hi Shelly, thanks so much for stopping by and reading the blog. I'm glad you enjoyed my list of top ten movies featuring more mature characters. And thanks for reminding me I need to see Love Actually again. I liked how that film featured romances between several different generations. All engaging and touching. Great film!

Now onward to the comment after that.

  33. Hi NR - i'm dying to know what NR stands for! :) Yes, Somethings Got to Give is a perfect example of mature characters (well, in age anyway - Jack's character certainly wasn't acting his age in the beginning. LOL) lighting up the screen. I loved watching them get to know each other and turn their revulsion around into respect then attraction.

Seriously - how many women first meet a guy and think he's a jerk, but later realize he is anyting but? It happens!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Hi Lynne!!! I loved Larry Crowne and Mamma Mia :) Beautiful movies!! Poignant and touching :) And a whole lot funny too!!!

And thanks for the remaining collection - something to hunt down for the next couple of weeks! I love discovering gems of books and movies and of course, authors too!!!

I signed up for the newsletter as well!!!! Thanks for the fab giveaway! Congrats on the new release!!!

  35. Hi Ju, it's great to meet you too! Yes, Larry Crowne was a super sweet movies. I just love Tom Hanks.
I'm glad you've found your way to the blog, and thank you for signing up for my newsletter, I noticed a few new names there, so I will contact those who signed up on the day Nas announces the three winners of the books.
I hope you enjoy some of the other movies on the list, too.
    Thanks for commenting.

  36. Some of those movies are great. I really love the maturity of them. Love can happen at any age and I think it is great when they show that in movies and not just younger people.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Hi Regina - I am so with you on that. Love endures, and it also happens for older people. Many times it is a reuniting of people who both may be widow/widower or something, but it happens.
I particularly loved LOVE AMONG THE RUINS. Wonderful movie.
Thanks so much for commenting and reading the blog.

  38. Lynne-
How about The Lion In Winter, with Katharyn Hepburn & Peter O'Toole? It's the story of England's King Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine. At this point late in their lives, Henry has locked Eleanor away (in some cold, lonely castle, I think) only letting her out to share Christmas with the family, but even though they claim to hate each other (and fight A LOT), they still really love each other! It's a classic.

  39. Lovely post! And you've listed two of my faves:

JULIE & JULIA (loved both the book and movie)

THE AFRICAN QUEEN (I've seen it a zillion times)

    ReplyDelete
  40. Hi Leigh, I loved that movie! Loved it. And I agree it is another classic starring Kate H.

Thank you so much for reading and commenting.

  41. Hi Liz, I'm so glad we have some common ground. Julie and Julia was a total gem.

Thank you for reading and commenting.

  42. Hi Lynne! I LOVED the movie It's Complicated. One of my all time faves. Thanks for making this great list. I can't think of another movie I would add, but PLEASE add my name to the drawing! I would love to win your books! Cheers!

  43. Hi AJ! Your name if definitely added to my drawing list. thanks for reading the blog and for commenting. I'm also glad that you approve of my list. :)

  44. Hi Lynne, Hi Nas

Nas thank you for bringing us another great author.

Lynne although i'm just 22 i love watching movies with older mature couples. I greatly enjoyed watching It's complicated, Mamma Mia and What Woman Want, but my all time favorite is The Notebook. I cry every single time i watch it.

Congratulations on your new release and all the best for your upcoming books.

  45. Hi Lynne and Nas, I visited Fiji, really been there for a week, two years ago, and enjoyed this paradise. What about the all-time favorite movie An Affair To Remember with Cary Grant and Deborrah Kerr? Lynne, I read many of your books and loved them all.

  46. Hi Sonali! I am especially glad to hear that a young person such as yourself enjoys seeing movies with older couples falling in love, or, as in the case of The Notebook, love that endures through all challenges. It is a beautiful and inspiring thing isn't it? Something we can all hope for in our own lives.

Thanks so much for reading and commenting!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Hi Mona, An affair to remember was a fantastic movie, one I'll always treasure, but I don't think the h/h were over forty? The premise for this blog. Correct me if I'm wrong, though. It is a classic and would have been on my list if I thought those characters were older. Thank you for the compliments about my books. You are so sweet!
Thanks for reading and visiting not only the blog but Fiji! If you're ever there again, you'll have to look up Nas! :)

  48. Great old movies. The best. Dark Victory with Betty Davis and George Brent. I don't know if they were really older or it was so long ago, they seemed older. :)

  49. Nas and Lynne,

Here's a little secret-my husband watched The Notebook with me and balled his eyes out. Literally, the tears were flowing! Our kids tease him relentlessly now.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Hi Manzanita, thanks for reading the blog and commenting. I haven't seen Dark Victory and will watch for it. It is funny how in movies from the forties and fifties people do all seem to look older. I guess it is the styles and also most of the films are in black and white.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Hi Donna - I think that is very sweet, and it shows you've got a good guy on your hands. The strong silent type only works in books!

    Thanks for reading and commenting.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I'm not sure if the Tame Lion is for real or not, but thanks - fantastic bact at ya!

    ReplyDelete
  53. At the beginning of the list of movies I was worried I wouldn't have seen any of them, but then I reached #7 and from then on I know what you're talking about :-)
I understand your "daydreaming problem" Lynne...

    ReplyDelete
  54. Hi Rachel, I'm so glad you were familiar with a third of the movies at least! And I hope I've tempted you to see some classics, too.

LOL about my "daydreaming problem". It has gotten a lot better now that I write those thoughts down!

    ReplyDelete
  55. What a fantastic list! There really are a lot of them. The African Queen is one of my all time favourite movies, and can you imagine it with a hot young Hollywood couple in their early 20s? It would have been awful! They were exactly the right characters to tell that story.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Great post, and a fantastic list! I loved the secondary story in Julie and Julia, too. I found it much more intriguing than the main storyline.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Hi Amie - I'm so glad you liked the list. No, I can't imagine The African Queen with any other actors besides Kate and Humphrey, especially young ones!

Hmm, has anyone ever named a hero Humphrey? LOL

    Thanks for commenting.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Hi Talli! thanks for reading the blog and commenting, and I totally agree that the love story outshined the main story in Julie and Julia. So sweet and touching how they adored each other, which proves that love comes in all sizes, shapes, and ages!
