Congratulations Jennifer! So over to Jennifer now...
Getting the call...the other call! by Jennifer Probst
When I was young, I dreamed of getting the call from an editor asking to buy my book. Like most, I never imagined anything afterward, because that’s where the story ends. You know, the happily ever after part when you close the book and sigh and know that everything will be perfect from now on?
But life is never boring, and once you get one dream, something else shimmers before you in tempting glory. I think it’s a part of the world that is a good thing, as long as you can balance against greed. It’s good to have goals, and dreams, and push ahead for them. The human condition is built to achieve, and then re-adjust the view for something even higher. Enjoying each step along the way is crucial though, or we will become one long needy mess of constantly wanting more and more without appreciating each step in our journey.
OK, enough philosophy – back to the story!
So, when I finally got published, I realized I had to write another story. No problem! But then I had to re-sell it, and though I thought it would be easy to sell to another publisher once I had a good track record, I realized this wasn’t necessarily true. Many rejections ensued.
When I received the news that my beloved manuscript The Marriage Bargain sold to Entangled, I was beyond thrilled. Even more so when I sold a three book contract for a series, which allowed me to continue these characters and spread my writing wings. I had finally found a home.
But when the book launched on Valentine’s Day, and began climbing up the Barnes and Noble bestseller list to hit the number one spot, I was amazed.
A few weeks later, I received the call. The call that bumped my career to a higher level, and made my later dream come true...the dream to make “a list.”
My publisher conferenced in my editor and publicist and told me the incredible news. My little book that had gone on such a long journey hit the USA Today Bestseller List and debuted at #57. The dream that had shimmered before me like a mirage crystallized into reality.
How does it feel to get the call? As good as it feels to learn someone wants to buy your book. It humbles a writer to know that readers love your story. It’s exciting to feel you achieved something you always dreamed of. It’s scary to realize your goals have once again been bumped up, and the pressure to create another success whispers in your ear while you write your next story.
But it’s so worth it. Those crazy emotions make you feel alive like never before. And the best part?
Celebrating with your family and friends. The people who saw you work hard to realize the dream. The writers who have become part of your core group to cheer you one and help promote your success. That is the true glory of such a call – being surrounded by people who love you.
If you haven’t read The Marriage Bargain, I hope you will check it out...along with the other Entangled titles I am happily ripping through!
Here’s a blurb:
THE MARRIAGE BARGAINA marriage in name only...
To save her family home, impulsive bookstore owner, Alexa Maria McKenzie, casts a love spell. But she never planned on conjuring up her best friend's older brother—the powerful man who once shattered her heart.
Billionaire Nicholas Ryan doesn’t believe in marriage, but in order to inherit his father’s corporation, he needs a wife and needs one fast. When he discovers his sister’s childhood friend is in dire financial straits, he’s offers Alexa a bold proposition.
A marriage in name only with certain rules: Avoid entanglement. Keep things all business. Do not fall in love. The arrangement is only for a year so the rules shouldn’t be that hard to follow, right?
Except fate has a way of upsetting the best-laid plans…
