Spotlight-Lilian Darcy with Marry Me, Cowboy?

We invited Australian author Lilian Darcy to drop in and share with us about her latest release Marry Me, Cowboy.

Lilian Darcy was born on Valentine’s Day. This auspicious date, as well as a love of reading, set her destiny as a writer of romance and women’s fiction from an early age. She has also written extensively for Australian theatre and television, under another name. Her plays have been professionally performed by some of Australia’s most prestigious theatre companies, and have received two award nominations for Best Play from the Australian Writers Guild, while in 1990 she was the co-recipient of an Australian Film Institute award for best TV mini-series. She has now written over eighty romances for Harlequin, as well as several mainstream novels, including Cafe du Jour, originally published by Mira Books Australia.

What do you love most about writing ?

Escaping from the real world where I have no control, into a fictional world where I rule everything.

What do you think makes a good story?

Something that makes the reader ask questions and keeps them turning the pages. I like the emotional suspense in romance just as much as the more plot-based suspense in, say, crime fiction or fantasy.

And, of course, great characters. If the characters aren’t relatable or three dimensional then how can you care what happens to them, or what they feel?

You write about exotic places  – what is your ideal holiday destination?

If I’m feeling tired and stressed, somewhere luxurious where I can just lie back and do nothing – a tropical beach, a five-star cruise, an amazing heritage hotel. This kind of holiday destination only ever features in my imagination, not in reality. When it comes to planning real holidays, my husband and I always choose somewhere that involves a lot of very energetic hiking and sight-seeing, and I return home more exhausted than when I left.

Anywhere you haven’t travelled you would like to go?

Right now we have two holidays planned, one to South Australia in November, and then a huge cycling trip from Copenhagen to Paris in July 2015, in support of The Kids’ Cancer Project. There are other places I’d love to go, but for the moment I’m focusing on dreaming of things that are actually going to happen, because I’m really excited about both these trips.

What one item do you always pack when you travel?

A writing notebook!

Tell us a little about your current release …..

“Marry Me, Cowboy” was a hugely fun book to write, because the chemistry between Jamie and Tegan was so contradictory and evolved very rapidly from one thing to something else. I loved using the rodeo background, and worked hard to make sure the detail was authentic and exciting. There are also a few characters in there that I’m returning to in future stories, such as my next novella “Late Last Night” which will be out in February next year.

Right now, “Marry Me, Cowboy” is available in ebook, with easy buy links at www.montanabornbooks.com There, you’ll find out about other stories by authors such as Megan Crane, C J Carmichael and Jane Porter, as well as fellow Australians Trish Morey, Kelly Hunter and Sarah Mayberry, and lots more.

    1. Yes, I think ruling the real world would be way less fun.

And yes again, isn't that model gorgeous? Love her! Wish I knew who she was!

    1. My mother-in-law always somehow manages to find me a combined Valentine + Birthday card, so there must be a few of us - enough for Hallmark to give us our own category!

  7. Hi Lilian. I love the sound/look of this book. I love the interview too. 'Escaping from the real world where I have no control, into a fictional world where I rule everything.' LOL. That's me, all right!

    Hiya Nas.

  9. Re the notebook - writers never really go on holiday :)

  10. Paris and Australia? Whew! Paint me jealous.

    1. Yeah, but Crystal, to get to Paris I have to cycle 1200 k (750 miles) in a week. Which means a heck of a lot more cycling between now and then to get fit enough.

  11. Like several others, I love the line about escaping from the real world and ruling the fictional one. I have a feeling most writers feel the same way, but Lilian expressed it really well.

I hope she and her hubby can squeeze in one or two night at a five-star resort during their upcoming trips.

    (Love your new photo, Nas.)

  14. Lilian, my husband and I take hiking/sight-seeing vacations, too, and I agree with you. Sometimes I come home more exhausted than when I started. I also bring a writer's notebook with me whenever I travel. Congratulations on your new romance novel. The cover is beautiful.

Thanks to Nas for sharing this wonderful book debut with her readers.
