The
Hard Stuff and Me
by
Mickey
J. Corrigan
As a fiction writer, I
am often asked if I have experienced what my characters go through in my
stories, novellas and novels.
The short answer is no.
Not even close.
For one thing, my
protagonists love to drink. I like a glass of Malbec or Cab, a pint of dark
beer, but I sure can't toss down the cocktails like my characters can. I'd
never be able to write the next day. I am, in short, a booze wimp.
I also have no
experience with hallucinogenic drugs. I have never been a hooker. I do not have
a sugar daddy. Nor have I committed con jobs, slept with my boss, or dated a
sex offender.
My life is so boring!
Which is why I write about the kinds of characters that most amuse me. They get
themselves into deep shit, then crawl out again. Or not. They drink until they
drop, then suffer the consequences. They fall in love with the wrong guy. Over
and over again, until their hearts hurt as much as their hungover heads.
And me? I sit at a
computer and imagine the worst messes that adventurous, crazy and funny women
could possibly get into. And then I try
to find a way to rescue them from themselves.
Occasionally, I may
have a drink to celebrate their recovery. Cheers!

Originally from Boston,
Mickey J. Corrigan lives and writes and gets into trouble in South Florida,
where the men run guns and the women run after them. The tropics provide a
lush, steamy setting for hot Florida pulp. Recent books include the edgy
novellas in The Hard Stuff series from the Wild Rose Press: Whiskey Sour
Noir, Vodka Warrior, Mai Tail Guy (a
free read) and the new novella Tequila Dirty. In this
twisted story, a good cop meets a bad girl. And wishes he hadn't.

Something bad has
happened (again) in Dusky Beach. And Rita Deltone, a tough talking
waitress from Lemon Run, Florida, is smack in the middle of it. She's being
interviewed while all trussed up, lying there in the stark white room with
a bandage on her head. She knows all too well the dirt road she took to get
down so low, but she takes the long way around in the telling.
Liam Donell is the new detective in
town. His partner is on vacation so he has to handle all the dirty work.
But this Rita chick is pretty cute. He's not making the best decisions
regarding the case, then it turns real ugly.
An unlikely couple, Rita and Liam try
to make the best of a bad situation. With hot, hilarious, and surprising
results.

Nice thing about being an author: you can torment your creations in ways that would get you arrested if you did that to people in the real world. Nice to meet you!
ReplyDeleteAgreed. It's so much (safe) fun.
DeleteNice to meet you too.
Can't wait to read your latest Mickey. Enjoyed Whisky Sour Noir. Love the term: booze wimp. I don't understand why people would think we only write what we have experienced. Be a lot of dull books out there!
ReplyDeleteHi Nas!!
Thanks you! Nice of you to say. Hope you like Tequila Dirty. It's a wild one.
DeleteWahoo to Floridians! *waves from Orlando* I'm totally the same way--writing adventures I'd never want to have in order to experience them...without the mess. =)
ReplyDeleteWAVE from South Florida!
