Spotlight on Alison Stuart & The King's Man

This week's Spotlight on Author is on Alison Stuart and her latest release, The King's Man!

Award winning Australian author, Alison Stuart learned her passion from history from her father. She has been writing stories since her teenage years but it was not until 2007 that her first full
length novel was published. Alison has now published 6 full length historical romances and a collection of her short stories.  Her disposition for writing about soldier heroes may come from her varied career as a lawyer in the military and fire services. These days when she is not writing she is travelling and routinely drags her long suffering husband around battlefields and castles.

ABOUT THE KING’S MAN

If you are looking for a change from Regencies and Highlanders, then I would love to introduce you to the dark days of the English Civil War (1640s…cavaliers and roundheads). The setting is 1654 – Charles I is dead, his son is in exile and in the smoke filled parlours of London inns, the last of the royalists plot the death of Oliver Cromwell.

This is historical romance with a difference… probably more historical WITH romance and a little darker than your average historical romance.

The idea for this book came from a throw away line in Antonia Fraser’s biography of Cromwell (Cromwell – Our Chief Of Men)… ‘In February 1654, a Miss Granville hurled a brickbat at the Lord Protector’s Coach.’ I never could discover who Miss Granville was or why she was hurling brickbats but I did discover that at this time there were several (unsuccessful) plots to assassinate Cromwell with a bizarre cast of real life characters that I could never have imagined including the Baron de Baas, the French envoy. De Baas was the brother of D’Artagnan – yes the Musketeer who inspired Dumas’ story – and a complete idiot!

Alison’s latest release THE KING’S MAN

The second in a tantalising trilogy from award-winning author Alison Stuart, about warriors, the wounds they carry, and the women that help them heal.

London 1654: Kit Lovell is one of the King’s men, a disillusioned Royalist who passes his time cheating at cards, living off his wealthy and attractive mistress, and plotting the death of Oliver Cromwell.

Penniless and friendless, Thamsine Granville has lost everything.  Terrified, in pain, and alone, she hurls a piece of brick at the coach of Oliver Cromwell, and earns herself an immediate death sentence. Only the quick thinking of a stranger saves her.

Far from the bored, benevolent rescuer that he seems, Kit plunges Thamsine into his world of espionage and betrayal – a world that has no room for falling in love.

Torn between Thamsine and loyalty to his master and King, Kit’s carefully constructed web of lies begins to unravel. He must make one last desperate gamble – the cost of which might be his life.

  1. One of my favorite series was a romance that started in the1600's and spanned 80+ years... I loved learning the history and reading about how people lived then xox

    1. Between us, Launna, I would love to do that with this series. I have always dreamed of a 'Thorntons of Seven Ways' series... perhaps one day!

  2. That Cromwell was a rotter, so I'm not surprised there were many plots to kill him. Great historical period for a romance.

    1. It was an important period of history... so much of our understanding of modern democracy came out of this little experiment with republicanism. The concept of the divine right of Kings continued through in France and resulted in the French revolution and 100 years later in the Russian revolution. The English sorted it earlier!

  10. I agree with Karen. This book sounds very interesting. I like the singularity of the title: The King's MAN--not men. Many congratulations Alison. Thanks for sharing this with your readers, Nas.
