Spotlight on Theresa Milstein, Time & Circumstance and Giveaways!

This week we have Theresa Milstein sharing with us about her poetry. And there are giveaways!

Theresa Milstein writes middle grade and YA, but poetry is her secret passion. Her vignette collection, TIME & CIRCUMSTANCE, will be published by Vine Leaves Press in March 21, 2017. She lives near Boston Massachusetts with her husband, two children, a dog-like cat, and a cat-like dog. For her day job, she works as a special education teacher in a public school, which gives her ample opportunity to observe teens and tweens in their natural habitat.

Over to Theresa now...

The first half of my collection is prose and the second half is poetry. But one enduring  thread throughout, besides the unrelenting passage of time, is love.

There are three romance-driven prose pieces. “Violet’s Hill” glimpses unrequited love. “Daisy” reveals a potentially doomed romance. “Left Behind,” one of my favorites, poignantly explores love lost. These three characters are so different from me, and they were fun to write.

Here’s an excerpt from “Violet’s Hill”:

I concentrated on the sound of our breathing and willed my heart to keep beating.

The poetry section is where romance blossoms. There are many pieces dedicated to the kiss: “Deluge,” “Tempest,” “Lip-Lock.” Then “Steampunk,”  “Contortionist,” and “Past Prime” delve into the darker, more complicated types of attraction. Finally, “First Apartment,” “Yearning,” and “Autumn’s Crest” capture the longer relationship with lingering passion.

Here’s a stanza from “Tempest”:

She’s warmed by his radiance—
enticed to venture
through the tempestuous night
savouring his ripened lips once more.

I hope you fall in love with my collection too.

  6. Hi Theresa. Hi Nas.

I'm loving your prose and poetry, Theresa. One of my fave stanzas is the one you shared from Tempest. Looking forward to hosting you.

Oh...question...Relive a moment in time...too many to mention, but flying into Paris for the first time I'd like to repeat that. Unfortunately, like all such moments, we only get to do them once.

    1. Denise, thank you for the kind words! I wrote The Tempest during a snowstorm. Oh, choosing Paris is excellent! I actually think I talk about Paris during my stop to Liz's blog on my tour. I wrote so many posts!

As for a moment I would want to relive- maybe my release day for my book. It went by in a magical blur and reliving it would help me try to prolong the excitement. :)

  11. Love it! Poetry is such a passionate and joyful experience!

What moment would I relive? So hard. Probably the last outing we had before my dad passed away. My kids were little and he found such joy in going on rides with them at the local fairground. Lots of fun.

  13. I am a huge poetry fan, so I am glad that there are people out there like me - they're novel writers but they do love poetry and prose a whole lot too. The theme of time being the underlying idea between a lot of them appeals to me as well.

  14. I didn't really understand Steampunk. When I read it. Maybe I should give it a second read. I do think this is a great book. Theresa you should be very proud of yourself!

    1. Sharon, thank you! The picture that inspired the poem was pretty cool. It's about one of those toxic boyfriends. She knows she should get away, but she's drawn to him. I tried to make the rhythm sound like a train. http://theresamilstein.blogspot.com/2014/07/modern-steampunk.html
