FAVORITES:

The beach at night or on a dark, rainy day when you have the hard-packed sand to yourself and you can walk for miles without getting hot or sunburned;
An unfamiliar novel you discover on a shelf somewhere and open to the first page, and the writing is magical, it just sweeps you up and away into a whole new world;
Old-fashioned independent bookstores with books piled up to the ceiling, large comfy chairs to lounge in, and fluffy cats that brush up against you and purr while you read;
Bars in strange towns with friendly bartenders, waitresses who call you honey, chatty patrons who know all about the town you're in and are happy to tell you stories about it.

Bookstore Bar, Seattle
FRUSTRATIONS:

Politics, especially now;
Dumb inventions and gadgets that make their way into our lives and become mandatory in order to function—but waste our time and money;
Greedy people who take more than their share of our resources;
Stupidity and ignorance and everything else that holds us back from being the beautiful world we have been given to care for.

FABULOUS:

Our planet's many diverse, beautiful environments—most of which I've never visited but want to one day.

Project XX

In 2012, a deranged grad student dressed as the Joker shot and killed dozens of movie goers at a Batman film opening in Colorado. Gun violence is so out of control in America that it has become a cruel joke.
Unlike most of Mickey Corrigan's novels, Project XX made itself known to her at that time, demanding to be written. Usually she researches, prepares, then writes. In this case, she wrote first, then did the research on gun violence, female violent crime, and school/mass shootings.
Males are almost always the perpetrators of mass shootings. But females are fully capable of shocking acts of violence and, in the US, military-style weapons are as easy to access as a new hairstyle.

  2. Congratulations Mickey. I share your favourites and many of your frustrations. Fabulous? Oh yes. Most definitely.
    Here in Australia we have (mostly) escaped the gun culture. For which I am grateful. No arguments that the female can be at least as deadly as the male though.

    1. I love Australia!! The gun culture here is just out of control. Last night more deaths from a (male) shooter in Vegas.

  3. That sounds like an interesting premise for a book.

  4. Thanks! Fortunately, girls are much less apt to commit violent acts than males.

    1. Thank you. And now the devastation in Vegas. Still, will they change the gun laws? No.

  9. The timing for this couldn't be more appropriate. I'll never understand the urge to kill so many--it's heartbreaking.

    1. It is so deeply sad. Mass killings are happening so often now that a book on the subject would seem appropriate almost anytime.

  10. Sounds like a powerful read.

    Like Mickey- I love the beach at any time. Love to visit and rejuvenate. :)

  11. A walk by the ocean or a swim in the salty water is a way of blocking out the chaos. It's so hard to find peace.

  12. The world seems to be a scary place any more. That's why it's so necessary to find quiet time to make sense of your life, your story, and your world. Thanks for sharing this with your followers, Nas. And thanks, Mickey, for reminding us that anyone can do violence.

    1. Sadly true. With such ready access to guns, anyone can launch mass violence here--and they do.

  14. A very timely review, sadly. I know I'm not American and my opinion might not be to everyone's taste, but, if it were down to me, I would ban all guns. Guns don't kill people. People do. By making guns accessible to people, society is already creating the circumstances in which these guns will be used to murder human beings. Unfortunately, Las Vegas will not change anything. I pity my American brothers and sisters.

    Greetings from London.

    1. You are sadly correct in that gun laws will not be changed in the aftermath of yet another American massacre. People kill people AND make the laws that allow others to do so. You are fortunate to live where you do.
