Keeping your goal in focus

It was exactly a year ago I was preparing for the RWNZ conference thinking of how time was slipping through my hands. I wanted to be a published writer. I wanted it so much I could feel it in my bones. I had worked hard, studied the craft and felt it was time for the hard work to pay off.

A few days before the conference I got an email from my editor offering me a contract and just like that one dream was realised and I had to start another learning curve. I had to learn about social media, blogging and twitter.

I learned that I can’t capture my audience in 60 characters, not without help. I am clueless when it comes to setting up pages and knowing where to hang out. Between you and me, I was never one of the cool kids in school, so why would I know what to do nowJ

I do not have the time or energy to organise my personal life and professional life and still have time to build my career as a writer. I am not one of the lucky ones with an endless supply of money who can quit my job and write full time, I didn’t marry the handsome billionaireJ

What I can tell you is I discovered the smart way to do things. I have a goal of being a bestseller in a few years but I don’t have my head in the clouds, so I know I need a plan. My plan is to work hard at getting the job done. If I opened a business I wouldn’t hire myself to do the marketing if I wanted the business to succeed, so I have the same philosophy when it comes to my career as a writer.

It’s tempting to do it all on your own and I did try and organise blogs and reviews but ended up getting no writing done. So the point I am trying to make is get someone as nice and organised as Nas Dean to help you through the process.

She lets you know when your tweets aren’t formatted correctly. She edits your books so they are the best they can be. She is your virtual organiser and makes sure you attend your appointments when you’re supposed to.
[ Thank you so much Kamy! You were also a wonder to work with!]

The learning curve will always continue but my philosophy is, ‘Don’t sweat the small stuff.’
Kamy has two recent releases.

BREATHE AGAIN

After a tour at war and countless shifts in the hospital emergency room, Nick knows that no matter how hard he tries to change things, people are the same. So when his estranged wife Skylar reveals that she stopped taking birth control and is pregnant, he shouldn’t be shocked. Betrayal burns and panic sets in as memories of his shattered home life remind him that he can’t play happy families.

Skylar knows one thing—she’s head over nurse’s shoes in love with the stubborn and unemotional Nick. She loves him enough to believe in the man he is, even though he can’t see it for himself and hides behind a mask. As he calls their child “hers” and tries to live apart from her, Skylar’s heart breaks, but she refuses to give up hope that he’ll do the right thing.

When disaster strikes, Skylar realizes Nick might never change, so she risks everything and sets him free, hoping he’ll come back, for her and their baby. Is heat, passion and a vow enough to seal this marriage and make them a family?

  2. " If I opened a business I wouldn’t hire myself to do the marketing if I wanted the business to succeed"

You're speaking right to me, girl! lol

And I love the premise of an already married couple and their struggles to be together. In our throw-away world, it's important to see that love is something to fight for.

    1. I will highly recommend it. I went to my local writing chapter and they were all wondering how I was getting attention in the right places as someone who only got published a year ago, and I had to tell them about Nas, my not so secret weapon. Thanks for coming by;-)

  9. I've always enjoyed books set against a medical background, so these books sound right up my alley. Good luck with them, Kamy. I hope you get the best seller status you want with them.

I had no idea you did so much behind-the-scenes promotional work with writers, Nas. (Too bad I didn't write a romance!)

  19. I was interested in your comment: 'I am not one of the lucky ones with an endless supply of money who can quit my job and write full time'.

I gave up my job through ill-health thinking I could earn my living writing. It soon became clear that this was not as easy as I had imagined and many successful authors have said it takes longer than you think to be successful so don't give up your day job. Glad you have made a success of it. Best wishes for the future.
