The Thrill of the First Time
We all remember our first time. The anticipation and the nerves, the hope and excitement. The wonder and curiosity, wanting to know what it would feel like, imagining the moment for years, building it up, reading about it and asking our friends to tell us everything they knew … then finally knowing that it was about to happen, about to take us away to a whole new world, happy yet self-conscious of the bareness and intimacy of it all, willing to take a chance to feel something new, something intense …
And afterwards, satisfaction, mixed with the slightly bitter taste, perhaps, or what could have made it even better - a little more finesse, a more explosive climax, a deeper understanding of what it all means and why we wanted it so badly.
Some of us experience our first time alone, others in groups. My first time was all about a professional wrestler, a man I had watched on tv growing up. While the first time for others is in a big group, learning all about themselves amongst the throngs of other virgin … authors.
Ah yes, sorry to disappoint romance fans - I'm talking about publishing here.
I'm visiting here today on the Story Sprouts Writing Day Workshop and Anthology 2013 Around The World Blog Tour, and I wanted to thank Nas for hosting us on today's tour!
While my post is decidedly not G-rated, I wanted to share a book written by the Children's Book Writers of Los Angeles (did you know YA is also considered kid lit?) - Story Sprouts. Story Sprouts is the debut publication for CBW-LA Publications, and for many of the 19 authors highlighted in the book. These authors trusted us with one day - six hours - of pure, intense writing fun, with the promise of publication after three months. A few have been previously published - I've been a professional freelance journalist for more than three years now, while others in the book have been published in literary magazines, as script writers for popular tv shows, and even one winner of an award for outstanding YA fiction - but by and large, Story Sprouts was the very first time being published for our authors.
The emotions that I described above are the roller coaster that several of our writers just jumped on during their publishing debut. Won't you please support them on their journey and foray into the world of published authors? Pick up a copy of the book, in paperback or on Kindle, and encourage them to keep writing! (Bonus - 50% of the proceeds go to Philippine Disaster Relief through January 2014!)
Tell them they are talented and worthwhile, and wish them well as they keep on writing and discovering and taking risks, delving deeper and deeper into their sense of being an author.
And, as you read along, we will introduce you to the exercises they used in their one day workshop, allowing you the opportunity to play along at home, glass of wine in hand, nestled snugly by the fire, ready for romance and intrigue to surface from deep within…
Cheers!
