Spotlight on Mickey J. Corrigan and Songs Of The Maniacs & Giveaway

Our Spotlight this week is on author Mickey J. Corrigan and her latest offering, Songs Of The Maniacs and there are giveaways!

What if You No Longer Know Who You Are?
Mickey J. Corrigan

When I wrote Songs of the Maniacs a few years ago, I was trying to decide if I wanted to continue to be a writer. Who was I as a writer and what did it matter? My mood was dark (obviously), but I came upon a cool idea: What would happen if I let my writer brain grapple with the issue instead of my logic brain? In other words, stop thinking and start writing.
So I let the story inside me trickle out. I set it in a fictional world—somewhere near me, sometime in the near future—in which EVERYONE seemed to be losing their identities. Where who are you was being replaced by who are you becoming?
What a ride that was. I had no idea where I was headed or what it all meant, but I was determined to write without judgment and see what came out on the page. If I got off my own case, what kind of story would I tell myself?
The results surprised me. If you read the story (which has now been through the usual multiple revisions but still maintains the same twisted plotline), you can watch as a woman loses her identity, then becomes someone else.
Wow. A psychiatrist would have a field day with this one, should I try to explain how the contents had something to do with my own rite of passage.
Finding an interested publisher took me on another journey, one that lasted more than four years. But along the way, I found an agent, a terrific writing partner, a supportive writing group, and myself. And yes, I am still a writer.

When the real you is someone you don't know, then you sing the songs of the maniacs.

From her office at a mental health institute outside what appears to be Miami, a troubled young woman counsels deeply disturbed clients while coping with her own heightening concerns. These include frightening consciousness lapses, violent memories of a high school sexual relationship, a menacing stalker, and an annoyingly arousing visitor who may or may not be insane. All this on a single stormy day at a time when a new mental health disorder has become epidemic and is threatening to distort memory and identity, unmooring the validity of reality itself.

The young woman’s search for illumination becomes an eerie struggle, as she attempts to understand her past, present, and true self. The hypnotic pull of the story lies in the mystery of the storyteller herself and her murky, uneasy sense of doom. A seductive and chilling novella, Songs of the Maniacs relies on clear prose and uncluttered imagery to delineate a fascinating descent into the abyss beneath the lush tropical surfaces of contemporary American paradise.
