Spotlight on Susan Dunn & Paw Prints of Love Anthology

This week our Spotlight on Author is on Susan Dunn. She has a new story out "Jake's Dilemma" in the anthology by Gumnut Press "Paw Prints of Love".

Susan writes short stories, creative non-fiction, family history and poetry. She enjoys taking photos and publishes inspirational thoughts with her images. Susan has published short stories and poetry in Katherine Susannah Prichard anthologies.
Perth’s Darling Ranges, where she shares her home with two adorable cats and their master, provides great opportunities for capturing images of our unique Australian bushland and wildflowers. She especially loves spending time with her five grandchildren; loses many hours sorting through extensive family archives; and occasionally dabbles in sewing, crafts and other fun hobbies.
When she’s writing, you can find her with a cup of coffee at any one of several nooks in her home or back yard, overlooking her country-cottage garden and the hills.

You can also find her on the following links:

1.      Do you think someone could be a writer if they don’t feel emotions strongly?

I believe someone needs to be aware of the range of emotions and to have felt them to be a writer. Being an empath may be useful, though separating self from the story may come as an acquired skill. Albeit, some elements of self will invariably be part of any story.

2.      What was an early experience where you learned that language had power?

My maternal grandmother loved the power of words. She’d have me explore the meanings of words like ‘spendthrift’ and note the joining of two words so dissimilar when taken separately. Her love of language, rendered in the music of her voice as she read to me as a child, is forever part of my soul.

3.      As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?

Cats are peaceful. I’d have to go with cats. Like our beautiful Smooch. Cats are both loyal and fickle. Cats will let you stroke them only when they want attention. They are their own ‘person’, but cannot do without company.

Otherwise I’d say a horse. A horse is in a hurry to be somewhere and needs a good rider to pull in the reins to make it stop. I’m a bit like that. My mind races ahead with ideas, yet needs to pull up and make them happen!

When Jake loses the last puppy he intended training as a sheep dog, he sets himself the task of finding a new one. He travels to a country fair where he bumps into Katie, who had a crush on him in high school and finds himself warding off unwanted attention from Ella, his ex-girlfriend. Will Jake be lucky enough to find genuine love?
