As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up?
As soon as I learned to read, I wanted to be a writer. I loved writing stories at school and won certificates each year in Primary School for creative writing. I always had a vivid imagination and I think that growing up on a farm with lots of space to explore really enriched the inner world of my mind.
What is your favorite part of being a writer?
My favourite part of being a writer is typing The End! But seriously, I really enjoy crafting my characters and their backstories, deciding what they look like and what their emotional wounds are that are keeping them from finding and keeping true love. Recently, I’ve been reading a lot of books about attachment theory, so I now decide what attachment style my hero and heroine have and it helps me build their conflict and ways to overcome it so than can achieve secure attachment.
Do you hear from your readers much? What kinds of things do they say?
I hear from some readers via social media or email and at RWA conferences. It’s lovely to meet people who have really enjoyed my books and then gone on to write their own stories, especially if I have inspired them in some way as I was inspired in the past by my favourite authors. Some of the things readers have said to me are that they like the humour I inject in my novels along with the deep emotion and passion. Last year at RWA in Adelaide, I spoke to a lovely lady who had subsequently written 30 novels after being inspired by a workshop I’d given some years ago. I found it tremendously moving to think I’d helped someone launch their writing career.
How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?
I am currently writing my 99th novel. I have a number of favourites such as my 50th which was a turning point in my writing process. It was the first book in the Caffarelli trilogy, Never Say No to a Caffarelli. Another favourite was my 75th One Night on the Virgin’s Terms. I also loved writing my first Presents novel in first person point of view- One Night in my Rival’s Bed. That was such a fun story to write. And I can absolutely guarantee my all time favourite will be my yet to be written 100th book!
