This week our Spotlight on Author: Kandy Shepherd. She has a new book out, Second Chance Under the Mistletoe.
Kandy Shepherd is a best-selling, award-winning author of contemporary romance. Her heartfelt, passionate stories are set in exciting locations around the world and are published in multiple languages. Kandy believes in love-at-first-sight and real-life romance—she and her husband of many years decided to spend their lives together after three days! She loves it when readers tell her that her books make them laugh and make them cry. Kandy lives near Sydney, Australia with her husband and numerous four-legged friends.
1. What are your favorite literary journals?
So many favourites! How do I choose?
Like many romance writers, I love Jane Austen, with my favourite of her books being Pride and Prejudice. Then there are the Bronte sisters’ books, especially Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. An all-time favourite is Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. Tess of the d’Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy, too. Thought-provoking books like The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, The Quiet American by Graham Greene and 1984 by George Orwell are also memorable. Then there is an all-time favourite about overcoming adversity I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou. And, of course, The Lord of the Rings trilogy by Tolkien.
2. What is your favorite childhood book?
Without a doubt, Seven Little Australians by Ethel Turner. Then there was The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. Do we count Enid Blyton among classics? As a child, I adored her books, especially The Faraway Tree books.
3. What is the most difficult part of your artistic process?
Staying focused. I am the world’s worst procrastinator!
4. Tell us about this book...
Second Chance Under the Mistletoe includes all my favourite romance stories to write in one. It’s a second-chance romance, a Christmas story, and is set in London, UK.
What is different for me this time is the heroine is older, at age forty-four. Initially I found that a challenge, until I got used to writing a heroine at a different stage of life than my usual romance heroines who are generally in their twenties and early thirties. But, of course, once I started writing Natalie’s story I fell in love with her and with Jon, her ex-husband, who she hasn’t seen for twenty years. Those two really deserve to be together! Their daughter, Clem, brings her mother and estranged father home for Christmas. Can a touch of Christmas magic help them open up to a second chance at love?
A gorgeous hero and heroine who should never have been parted, a mother’s love, Christmas time in London—no wonder I loved writing this story! I hope you’ll enjoy reading it!
Second Chance Under the Mistletoe is the first book in a Duet. The second book Christmas Surprise for Her Boss by Scarlet Wilson is the daughter, Clem’s story. It’s a wonderful story!
