The Wedding Must Go On!

by Robyn Grady

I’m getting into a show called Don’t Tell The Bride. A betrothed couple are given $25,000 to stage their wedding – on one condition. The groom must choose and organize *everything*. The theme, the venue, the cake as well as the <gasp!> wedding dress. Now some guys are pretty clever. There’s been 20s gangster themes and romantic commitments uttered in snow-covered wonderlands. And luckily the gals have all loved their gowns.

This kind of concession wouldn’t work for Roxy Trammel, the heroine of my October UK Modern Romance release, The Wedding Must Go On.

Roxy creates exquisite wedding dresses and is particularly in love with the gown she designed for her best friend. It’s a finalist in a prestigious contest, the prize being a job in New York and a wad of cash, which means she can pay back a clutch of impatient creditors. The only condition?  Her gown must take its walk down the aisle at month’s end.

Not a problem.

Until Roxy’s friend unearths a shocking secret about her now ex-fiancé  – a piece of sordid information that Roxy isn’t sold on. The wedding is off and gown put away as are Roxy’s dreams of winning that contest. Then the insufferably sexy, commitment-phobic best man comes up with an idea.

Crazy. Doomed to failure. However, Nate Sparks assures Roxy their friends will be reunited. He even sweetens the deal. If she helps him with this scheme and he’s wrong – if his plan fails – that dress will still have its big day before the end of the month.

Roxy can dress up and he’ll marry her himself!

I’m giving away an autographed copy of The Wedding Must Go On. Simply leave a comment about whether you've known anyone to call off their wedding at the last moment - or whether you hoped they might.

  1. This sounds like a fun story, Robyn. My experience with weddings has been plain sailing to date. I sit watching the show you mention with my mouth agape at times. I worry for the brides!

    1. Hi Shelley!

Thanks for reading this post and for your comment!

It is a fun but emotional story with a heavy dose of Robyn Grady sensuality!

  2. Unfortunately, I do know someone who's future husband called off the wedding. It was so hard to see my friend upset, but in the end he wasn't right for her at all. She's married now and much happier.

    1. Hello Kelley!

I'm with you. A person would be just devastated if a wedding's called off. Good that you were supportive of her.

    2. Kelley, ditto what I said to Shelley. Feeling rather dense about now 8)

  3. I can't think of anyone who called off a wedding at the last minute, but I have witnessed one or two that I didn't think were a good fit. What do I know? The one I thought wouldn't work out is going strong while another seemed great and then fell apart.

    1. Lol! Theresa,

I just saw a love marriage of twenty five years fall apart. How can we predict what would happen?

    2. Hi Theresa! It's interesting, isn't it. Sometimes the couples you feel might not make the entire journey together find the right path. Then there's others, who everyone envies as a couple but whose marriage falls over.

  4. I've never known anyone who called off the wedding at the last minute. Just a few who didn't stay married very long.

    1. Hello Chey!

Don't we all know of someone who didn't stay married for long?

    2. Hi Chey! Yep, I know some too. A couple had gone out forever before marrying and then...all over.
      Thanks for your comment =)

    2. Hi Denise! It was a really fun story to write and I fell in love with the cover on sight. You have to read the 1st chapter to know why ;)

  6. Hi Nas and Robyn. I had to live with my now-husband organising quite of bit of our wedding, eg he picked the venue without me seeing it, as I was in the US (I'm an Aussie) studying for six months prior to our wedding. He did a really good job. But, I did select my own dress!

I don't know anyone who has called off their wedding - thank goodness!

    1. Hi Jennifer!

Thank heavens that you approved of the venue and other organising done by your husband without you being there! He sounds a keeper :)

    2. Jen, your husband sounds like a great big sweetie! You know, come to think of it, my husband chose our venue too, although I really liked it as well. Had an Irish theme. Ah, nice memories.
      Thanks for popping in =*)

  9. Hey Shelley! I know what you mean about biting your nails. At the beginning of the shows I cringe, knowing I would never let the guy choose everything even with the $25000 budget. But it all seems to work out in the end. Guess love will find a way =)

  10. Hi Kelley! I'm sorry to hear about your friend's disappointment. It's really unimaginable, isn't it. But obviously not the right guy for her. So glad she's happy now =)

  11. Hey, Robyn!
I mentioned to you elsewhere about buying my niece something from her wedding registry, and then about a month before her wedding, she "postponed it" on Facebook. That was over 18 months ago, and this past August I was finally able to give that present to someone else.
What I didn't tell you was about that "someone else's" wedding. What a wedding it was! The groomsmen (my son included) wore black dress pants and cowboy shirts (as the groom doesn't like to dress up). They said it was a "country theme", so they catered in barbecued hamburgers and hot dogs, plus corn on the cob and a few cold salads (and the family provided sweets for dessert, including three types of "wedding" cake and numerous platters of squares/tarts). I didn't think at the time it was that great of an idea (at least about the corn on the cob getting stuck in everyone's teeth), but you know what? It was casual, enjoyable, and delicious! I liked every aspect of it (except the corn, which I chose not to eat). They didn't have a receiving line or speeches either. We started dancing around 6 pm (pretty early by our standards) and we helped clean up the hall and lock the doors at 10:35 pm (definitely the earliest we've ever heard of before).
Fingers are crossed that this marriage lasts, as the couple are both around 25 years of age and have been living together for about 6 of those years. We have found that it's like a "kiss of death" once a couple marries around here.
My husband and I wed in 1981, and I have been organizing photos into scrapbooks for the past several years. I am only up to 1992 right now (as many photos went back to the forties upwards and some were even in the 1800s), but every single wedding we attended in those years have resulted in divorces - except for our siblings. Incredible....

  12. Laney, that is an incredible story! There has to be a book in that. Or a movie. Do you tell many people? They might think twice about inviting you =)
I have to say I like that sound of that wedding too. Imagine how relatively stree free those involved must have felt. And it's the way it used to be done. Before the days of endless credit.
My very best wishes that your son's friends have a long and happy union =)

  13. I was due to get married in England on the 14th of September 2008. Everything was booked and invitations sent out. That's when the family squabbles broke out it was bad enough for me to have lost my father a few years before and he wouldn't be able to walk me down the Aisle.

    Hi Robyn
With less then three months left I called it off, I couldn't handle the arguments anymore. With our honeymoon already booked for Las Vegas, hubby to be and I decide to get married there just the two of us and two of our American friends as witnesses. Calling off my wedding here was the best thing I could have done.

Instead of the wedding being about making sure everyone else was happy it was all about us.

    Charlotte xx

  14. Hi Nas. Nice place you have here.
I've been to a few weddings where it was super-obvious that the two were not compatible AT ALL!

Thanks for visiting my blog and leaving a comment. Nice to meet you. *waves*

  15. Sounds like such an interesting book! I went to one wedding that everyone thought would get called off. When they asked if anyone knew of a reason that the bride and groom should not marry- there were murmers throughout the church and it ended up being a bit awkward. But- they got married. Another couple I know got married, went on their honeymoon, came home and were getting divorced. She left the groom for the photographer.

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  16. Charlotte, I'm replying down here coz my connection won't let me use the reply tag.

I'm so sorry about your Dad. I know how hard that is. But I'm so glad you did what was right for you and your husband. I love the idea of flying away and having a truly intimate ceremony =)
I had friends years ago who said they were going on a trip to France and came back married. I thought it was so romantic. Well, it was!
    Thanks for sharing =)

  17. Hi Michelle =) That situation's awkward, isn't it? I was at a wedding once where the groom's mother whispered to me, "Oh, I hope it works out this time."
    Thanks for your comment!

  18. Oh no! Jess, I can't imagine the poor groom. That photographer must have been really something else! And murmurings to "Speak now or forever hold your peace"... bet the bride's cheeks were burning.
    Thanks for dropping in =)

  20. Thank God I've known no one who call off their wedding at the last moment! I can't imagine the groom/bride's feeling if something horrible like this happens to him/her. And the shame which the parents/family must endure?

Thanks for the chance to win, Robyn :) And thanks Nas, for being a great hostess ^^

  21. Hi Aline! Yep, being left standing at the aisle must be a terrible, terrible feeling. And I've just thought of that other movie with Richard Gere and Julia Roberts where she kept running off - that's it - Runaway Bride. And finally she married the man she was meant to share her life with. Good choice, Julia =)
