Spotlight on Dani Collins, & Scorch & Free Book!

This week's Spotlight on Author is on Dani Collins and her upcoming book, Scorch.

Canadian Dani Collins is an award-winning, USA Today Bestselling author of two dozen sexy, witty, vibrant romances written for Harlequin Presents, Tule’s Montana Born and herself. She’s married to her high school sweetheart and is adjusting to being an empty-nester. She doesn’t have any hobbies. She’s too busy writing.

What are a few things we would find on your desk?

  • My award from RT Book Reviews for Proof Of Their Sin (my very first Harlequin Presents!)
  • Hand cream and lip balm
  • An old-fashioned day planner that I write in with a pencil
  • A cache of hair clips (because I wear them when I sit down to write, then I take them off when my scalp feels tight, then I put my hair up again when I leave my desk, then come back with a fresh clip and… You get how they build up.)
  • Scraps of paper from (eeek, five?) works in process
  • Printed labels for Nas’s list of reviewers – waiting for my author copies!!  Wow!

What motivates you to write?

Most of the time writing is my escape from everyday nonsense so I look forward to it. Admin tasks and social media updates are a nice break when I come up for air, but I don’t often not want to write.

Share something about yourself no one else knows?

I think something that surprised me about myself was that I recently realized I’m an introvert. I always thought of myself as outgoing and friendly. My mother claims I was always happier being alone or one-on-one, so I guess I’ve always been this way, but it did surprise me to do a test and tick all the boxes as an introvert.

What was your favorite scene to write?

I love the scene where Jacqui tells Vin that he doesn’t get to tell her if she’s ready to date or not. He’s trying so hard to see her as off limits so she really blindsides him when she says she might be ready to start seeing people. She forces him see her as a woman and available. It completely shifts things between them.

Tell us about your book…

Scorch is Book Two in the new multi-author Firefighters of Montana series from Tule’s Montana Born. The five heroes in the books are smokejumpers. Jacqui’s husband, Russ, was their captain until he died last season. My hero, Vin, saw it happen and tried to save him.

Jacqui left for Florida shortly after the accident, to stay with her father. When the book opens, she is back in Glacier Creek planning to sell her house to Vin, who lives in it. But she realizes this is home and decides to take up her old job at the forestry base, working with the crew again and sharing the house with Vin. They’ve always been friends, but after a winter of being friends over the tablet, things start to take a turn into something else…

NOTE: You can help wildfire evacuees! We recently had a huge evacuation here in Canada. Eighty thousand people were displaced and they’ll be out of their homes for a while (if they have homes to return to!) My author proceeds from pre-orders of Scorch will go to the Red Cross Alberta Fires Appeal. Grab yours before the release date of June 14th to have your purchase count in the donation.

BLURB –

Jacqui Edwards is back in Glacier Creek to wrap up loose ends after the death of her husband, Russ, captain of a group of daring, talented smokejumpers. She wants to stay and reboot her life, but faces an uphill battle shedding the role of the captain’s fragile, grieving widow.

After growing up in foster care, Vin Kingston finally found a family when he joined the smokejumpers. Then, six months ago, his best friend and captain died in a freak jump accident right before his eyes. Vin is consumed with guilt and determined to watch over Russ’ widow. No easy task when the vibrant, beautiful Jacqui is busting out of her shell and challenging Vin’s vow to keep her off limits.

  1. That sounds like a bit of a tear jerker of a story, sounds good though. I have a bunch of stuff on my desk too. Including lip balm ad hand lotion.

    1. I find it works the best. Typing into my phone makes me bananas on a good day. It was such a revelation to me when I sat back and went, hey, wait. Why not just write something down? lol

  3. Great interview. Enjoyed learning about you and your writing. My husband was a firefighter for thirty-five years so anything to do with the business interests me, even though it would be different to being a smokejumper. Fire is a terrifying thing.

    1. Hi Beverly, I've had a few people get excited about the firefighting and there is definitely some of that along with the camaraderie that goes with, but I'm very much a romance writer, not so much a firefighter writer, :D

    1. Oh thanks so much Helen! That means the world.
And yes, I am in some amazing company with this series so I'm very excited for all the books too :)
It's super hot here for June. We're all melting so I've been hiding inside, but I may have to brave it and walk to get the mail today.

  6. I was an only child and very much an introvert. I've learned to embrace my more outgoing side and now I'm an outgoing introvert.

    1. i have a friend who calls herself a 'selective extrovert' which I think would be very handy to be able to decide when you want to be outgoing. And I think practice helps, right? I'm at home writing so much that I really don't get much opportunity to work on it.

  7. Dare I say it? (I DO!) This book sounds (ready for it?) h-o-t. :)

I've read a number of books about smokejumpers, and have enormous respect for the courageous men and women who put their lives in danger to fight wildfires. It's got to be some of the most dangerous work in the world.

  9. Hi everyone, just a quick note that I'm traveling this week. I will pop on as opportunity allows, but I need my laptop. I hate typing on my phone. Am I alone in that? Or do you feel the same?

  10. Wow! As always, Nas, you have intriguing writers to interview. Dani, your book sounds exciting and dangerous. My daughter just took a park ranger job out in Montana at Devil's Elbow Campground. How generous of you to provide funds for those whose homes were consumed by fire. All the best with your new book. Thanks for sharing this with your followers, Nas.

    1. Hi Sherry, thanks!
And I'm so glad I'm not the only one to like a pencil and paper dayplanner. Or do you use ink? I'm not that brave, lol.
