Mills & Boon author Pippa Roscoe lives
in Norfolk near her family and makes daily promises that this will
be the day she will leave the computer and take a long walk in the countryside.
She can’t remember a time when she wasn’t dreaming of gorgeous alpha males and
misunderstood heroines. Totally her mother’s fault of course—she gave Pippa her
first romance to read at the age of seven! She is inconceivably happy that she
gets to share those daydreams with her readers.
Pippa Roscoe on the web:
When did you first decide you wanted to be a writer?
It took me a little while to get there, I must admit! I was about 13 when I first started to write. It was a crime story which started with a dramatic car explosion. I got 5,000 words in and then my father accidentally cut through the power cable to the computer and I lost the whole thing. (He was fine though!) Somehow 'reality' and day to day life got in the way, until I realised that the stories filling my commute, my daily walks, my almost every single spare minute just wouldn't stop until I actually put them to paper. That was about 4 years ago. Then it took a little bit of time and practical negotiation while I worked out how to make it possible and since then I haven't looked back once.
How long does it take you to write a book?
Some are quicker than others. The first few were huge great fast paced things pouring onto the page. But others have taken much longer, especially when the characters aren't doing what I want them to do. But no matter how long it takes, the way that I feel when it's done is amazing.
What is your work schedule like when you are in the middle of a book?
By the time I'm in the middle of a book, I have such a detailed outline that I should be typing away furiously. I work best in the mornings, so I'm up and ready at my computer by about 7.30am and I work straight through to about 11 or 12 by which time I'm probably empty of all coherent thought! But there's always a point at about 32,000 when I fear that I'll not have enough words. And then, when I get to about 42,000 I fear that I have too many. But roughly at the middle of a story, I'm racing towards the end, enjoying the broad strokes, so that I can come back to it again with a little distance and really work out the kinks.

Nice to know about Pippa. Characters never do what the author wants, do they? All the best!
ReplyDeleteHa! I have two particularly troublesome ones at the moment, but I'm sure we'll wrangle out a good story together in the end! Best wishes.

DeleteSounds like another yummy book! Good luck to Pippa. On second thought, she doesn't need luck... she's already living her dream, which is more than most people ever do. May her alpha males and misunderstood heroines ever whisper their tales into her ear, so she can continue to live that dream.
ReplyDeleteThank you Susan! There's always a certain amount of luck involved in making dreams happen, that and a bit of hard work! But I will continue to write as long as my characters continue to talk to me (or sometimes shout at me!). Best wishes.
DeleteOh, my goodness, I didn´t know if to laugh ot cry about the power cable accident!
ReplyDeleteIris, I can honestly say I did both. To this day my father still blushes when I remind him of it. Best wishes!
