This week our Spotlight is on author Jane Godman. She has a new book out this month, Colton's Secret Bodyguard (The Colton's of Roaring Spring).
JANE GODMAN is a 2019 Romantic Novelists’ Award winner and 2018 Daphne du Maurier Award finalist. She writes thrillers for Harlequin Romantic Suspense/Mills and Boon Heroes and paranormal romance for Harlequin Nocturne/Mills and Boon Supernatural and St. Martin’s Press Romance. She also self publishes her historical and gothic stories.
Jane was born in Scotland and has lived in Germany, Wales, Malta, South Africa, and England. She still gets the urge to travel, although these days she tends to head for a Spanish beach, or a European city that is steeped in history.
When she isn’t reading or writing romance, Jane enjoys cooking, spending time with her family, and enjoying the antics of her dogs, Gravy and Vera.

1. When did you first decide you wanted to be a writer?
I’ve always loved writing, and for as long as I’ve been able to I’ve put pen to paper and told stories. As a teenager, I lived in South Africa, and my best friend and I discovered the novels of Kathleen E Woodiwiss when we were thirteen. We used to spend our evenings writing books in the style of ‘The Wolf and the Dove’ and ‘The Flame and the Flower’. When I had a big birthday (let’s just say it had a zero at the end), my friend gave me the most amazing present. She had kept one of the books I wrote when I was fourteen! It’s a medieval romance, written in felt tip pen. It’s one of my most treasured possessions.
2. How long does it take you to write a book?
It varies a lot. As a rule, I like to allow myself three months to write a full length book such as one of my Harlequin Romantic Suspense stories. That gives me time to revise and edit the story to a high standard before I submit it to my editor.
3. What is your work schedule like when you are in the middle of a book?
I do my best writing in the morning, so I try to write a few thousand words before lunch. Depending on how close I am to a deadline, I'll write some more in the evening, or I'll spend that time editing. I envy those people who can write five thousand words a day. Three is usually my limit.

ReplyDeleteNice to learn about Jane and the book sounds good
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a lot of words to me for one day. 3 months to write a book sounds fast to me so great going! The book sounds good.
ReplyDeleteGreat interview. 3K would be huge for me. After 1100 I usually pack it in:) Bodyguard sounds like a page turner.
ReplyDeleteGood answers!
ReplyDeleteI am a turtle writer. I can't imagine being done with a draft in 3 months and if I wrote 3k in a day I would be shouting from the rooftops. :) Bravo, Jane!

No kidding, Jane, this sounds like a wonderful book. Wouldn't it be great to write 3,000 words a day? Unfortunately, I spend too much of my writing time staring at the blank page. Three months to write a first draft? Again, Bravo! Wish I could do that. I might be able to write and edit one of my YA adventure short stories in that time depending on peace and quiet and time. I'm a morning writer, too, Jane. I'll connect with you online.
ReplyDeleteGreat interview, Nas. Thanks for sharing it with your followers.
My kind of bodyguard. Tall and handsome.
ReplyDeleteHave a fabulous day. ♥
You write way faster than me. I get a thousand words in, I think I'm the bomb. I'll have to up my game.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on all the awards and the new book.
