Spotlight on Georgina Penney!

Our Spotlight on author Georgina Penney.

Who is Georgina Penney?

I think I’m your average neurotic lady writer. I tend to drink a little bit too much caffeine (tea’s my poison of choice), the odd glass of wine after hours (red vino is the devil) and I have the kind of potty mouth a sailor would sing homages too.

I write full time so you can well imagine my wardrobe. I think “comfortable crazy cat lady” would be a great description of my choice in every day couture. When I go out and about I do have a thing for 50s fashion and pin up gear so I try to make an effort which is a little difficult given that I live between two relatively small villages in Brunei Darussalam.

If you catch me on a day when my manuscript is going well, I’m painfully bubbly. If you catch me on one of those days that it’s not, I think the Balrog from LOTR would probably have more charisma!

Hmm... What else? Well, I love travel, I love books and when I’m not impersonating the Balrog, I’m an incurable romantic. I have a completely inappropriate sense of humor. You know that friend of yours that says the thing that makes you laugh but leaves you looking around the room to make sure no one overheard at the same time? That’s me.

Oh, and I love reading!

Who is your favourite author?

This is a really hard question. I have so many!

If I’m talking contemporary romance I’d have to say Susan Elizabeth Phillips. I’d pretty much have her babies if she asked. If we’re talking erotica, Joey W. Hill is up there. Historical romance, Jennifer Ashley and Lisa Kleypas come to mind.

If we’re talking literature, I absolutely love P.G Wodehouse, Zadie Smith, Patrick Suskund and Rohinton Mistry. I also recently read Hillary Mantel’s Wolf Hall while I was in Thailand at the end of last year. I can’t remember the holiday much because I had my eyes glued to its pages.

Oh and let’s not forget Terry Pratchett, Robert Rankin and Ian M. Banks for the sci-fi/fantasy side of things.

What is your go-to writing craft book?

Honestly? I don’t have one. What I try to do is read other people’s books to see how they did it. It really depends on what I’m writing. For example, when writing Irrepressible You, I read a lot of P.G. Wodehouse because he’s the absolute master of hilarious banter.

I read a lot and if I come across an author I really love, I’ll try and work out what they’ve done with their characters, plot, pacing to draw me in.

What made you write this story?

Irrepressible You is actually a stand-alone sequel so I already had the heroine, Amy, slated for a story of her own. (The novel before it, Unforgettable You will be out around May this year.) When I wrote Unforgettable You, all my beta readers wanted to know Amy’s story, which was kind of scary because I loved her as well and wanted to be able to do her justice. Luckily, the hero, Ben turned up one day and fixed everything!

Tell us about your latest release...

I’ll give you the blurb of my book shall I, because I think that sums it up much better than I can off the cuff!

You don't become a notorious British celebrity without rubbing a few people the wrong way, which is why writer and comedian Ben Martindale has decamped to Australia until the latest media frenzy dies down.

When he meets Amy Blaine, a perky blonde who dresses like a 1950s pin-up girl, he knows he's hit the satirical jackpot. He begins to fill his weekly London column with snarky observations about her life, clothes, and even their most intimate moments. It doesn't occur to him that Amy, who is letting her guard down for the first time in her adult life, might be upset - after all, it's hilarious, and his readers love her!

It isn't until Amy discovers the extent of his betrayal that Ben begins to realize just how badly he's cocked up the best thing that ever happened to him. But is it too late?

  7. I was about to say the same thing Susan said about twin/sister/cousin. I'm not surprised Susan said it either. We tend to travel in the same circles from time to time. Great to meet you!

  13. You know, she just doesn't look like she has a potty mouth. However, I'll take her word for it and put her down on my list of authors to keep track of. Good luck on this book.
