Spotlight on Dani Collins & "Manhattan's Most Scandalous Reunion"

We have author Dani Collins this week under our spotlight. She also has a new book out this month, Manhattan's Most Scandalous Reunion (The Secret Sisters Book 2)

Award-winning and USA Today Bestselling author Dani Collins thrives on giving readers emotional, compelling, heart-soaring romance with some laughter and heat thrown in, just like real life. Mostly she writes contemporary romance for Harlequin Presents and Tule’s Montana Born, but her backlist of fifty books also includes self-published erotic romance, romantic comedy, and even an epic medieval fantasy. When she’s not writing—just kidding, she’s always writing.

What inspires you to write?

Great question! Originally, I was inspired to write romance because I loved the books so much. I wanted to write my own stories with my own characters. That still inspires me, but these days I mostly write because it’s my job and I have contracts and deadlines so I have to show up and do the work. I don’t really think about whether or not I’m inspired. However, I recently took a week off and rediscovered the little fire crackling inside me that says, ‘You need to write. Here’s an idea.’ It was exciting! Honestly, I think I need more breaks to really enjoy that burst of inspiration.

What is your favorite genre and why?

Romance, romance, romance. Mostly contemporary, but I’ve read lots of historical and some other fantasy/shifters/historical. I mostly enjoy a sexier read than a sweet one and I’ll read same sex and ménage and pretty much anything so long as it’s got a great romance at its core.

Share a bit about your writing process.

Sure! First, what am I writing? What’s the basic premise and where is it set? Those questions inform the character names. I need those very early in the process.

From there, I start building their back story. Why are they perfect for that other person, but also a complete disaster for them? Often, I’ll write a few opening scenes before I know much about the story, to get a flavor for the characters and the way they interact.

Then I work on plot points. What events bring them together, physically and emotionally? What can happen that will push them apart? Sometimes I write a details synopsis, sometimes it’s just that list. Eventually, I start writing the actual story and that first draft is always the hard part for me. I prefer the editing process, though I do a lot of that while I’m actually writing. If I get stuck, I go back to the beginning and look for plot holes or opportunities I may have missed.

When it’s all done, I very much look to my editor to give it that final punch up, revise and voila!

Tell us about your book...

Manhattan’s Most Scandalous Reunion is a reunion romance. (wink!) Nina left Reve when she realized he only saw their relationship as an affair. He wasn’t thinking of love, marriage, and a baby carriage the way she was. Now she’s being mistaken as a supermodel—and suspect the woman is her secret twin sister. She gets chased by paparazzi right into Reve’s building and draws him into her scandal.

Reve is allergic to scandal. He was in the center of one years ago and swore off being in the public eye, but he’s still hung up on Nina. He has never really experienced love so he doesn’t know that he’s fathoms deep with her, he just wants her in his life. And now that she’s going through so much drama, he’s compelled to help.

Eventually, they unravel the mystery of her birth family and Nina doesn’t need Reve’s help anymore. He can let her go. Or can he?

You may want to read the first book in this Secret Sisters duet, Married for One Reason Only, about Nina’s twin, Oriel.

  1. Ooh, this sounds like a fun story! I'm always interested in authors who prefer the editing stage, as I tend to struggle with that part -- after the rush of creating the story, I'm always wary of going back to it because what if I find it sucks and I lose all hope? Then when I finally force myself to edit, I have to re-remember that the whole point is to make it the best it can be :-)

    1. Hi Deniz,
I envy authors like you! I edit so much in my head, I struggle to get the story down. If it helps at all, I always remind myself that writing is rewriting. You will never get it perfect in one go so that's why editing was invented :) Good luck!
